The Globe and Mail calls the 2000’s an “unprecedented” decade of natural disasters, affecting anĀ average of 250 million people per year. You can check out their interactive slideshow on their website.
Scary stat: Oxfam predicts that by 2015, that number will increase to 375 million per year.
The G&M’s inclusion of Hurricane Katrina and Burma’s Cyclone Nargis remind us that while the initial weather events may be “natural”, how governments prepare for and respond to them adds an entirely human dimension to their overall impact.
